Meet Bo the Obama Dog

Sunday, January 2nd, 2011

The White House just did not seem complete without a pet to round out the first family.  When President and Mrs. Obama entered the White House with their daughters, they immediately set out to find just the right canine companion to keep them company in their new home.  They decided on Bo, now known as Bo the Obama Dog.  Bo is a Portuguese water dog, with a curly black coat and a white strip on his chest and white boots on his front paws.

His name, Bo, is reported to have been determined by two different factors.  First, the girls wanted to name the pup after their cousin’s cat, and second, he has been named after one of President Obama’s favorite musical artist, Bo Diddly.

There was some controversy when the Obamas first chose Bo as their new family pet.  Animal rights groups and rescue organizations would have liked the first family to have chosen a dog from a shelter or a rescue, while Bo was from a breeder.  President Obama’s response to these concerns was that they did, indeed, look at shelters; however, due to his daughter’s allergies, they were forced to find a breed that is hypoallergenic, which meant that they could not choose a dog of mixed breeds.

Bo is, in fact, a second chance dog, however,  He had been adopted to keep an older dog company, but the two dogs had not gotten along and Bo was given back to the breeder.  In this way, he is still a rescue of sorts.

Bo Portuguese Water Dog, a Gift for Obama?s Daughters

Barack Obama, the president of the United States of America is a much talked about person. Everyone talks about his new attained stature and the life in the White House. Media has been watchful of what he did as a contestant for the presidential elections and what he is doing after attaining the position. Obama once told in a show that he had promised his daughters to gift them a pet dog when they moved into the new presidential house.

Bo Obama, Portuguese Water Dog

The decision for the dog was tough. The first family wanted a shelter dog for the house. the presidential house does have many secrets, and the dog and its name was one of the most tightly kept one. When the dog arrived, a meeting was scheduled with the first family. The dog has been named Bo. Apparently, the pup has been gifted by Edward M. Kennedy who owns the same breed dogs himself. He was sure that the girls and the whole family would love their new pet. The new pet was a secret till the time the first lady, Michelle Obama gave exclusive excerpts to the media. The dog was much looked for and the anonymity behind the whole pet story kept the media buzzing with rumors.

Bo has been chosen as a pet due to some special reasons too. Malia is allergy prone and the family wanted a dog which is hypo-allergic. There had to be made a choice between a labradoodle and a Portuguese water dog, due to their special hypo-allergic nature. The first family finally has a new member in the shape of this black and white pup which will keep the White House filled up with joy. It will enjoy the company of its new owners. Being the first pet of the family, unconditional love will be showered on him.
